Being a stay-at-home mom isn’t easy.
I feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to stay home with my girls and teach them everything I know, but it still doesn’t make it easy.
Some people swear we just float through life, sipping on Starbucks, relaxing in our pajamas until noon. Those things are probably true, but also probably not entirely intentional.
If you’re curious about a day in the life of a stay-at-home mom of two, let’s talk about how my day normally goes.
4:30am. Baby wakes up (again). Fights sleep for an hour. Husband leaves for PT (sometimes making it harder to put baby back down, while he “sneaks” around the house in his crinkly workout uniform).
5:30am. Baby is (probably) asleep in bed with mama.
6:30/7:00am. Baby wakes up for the day. Toddler wakes up for the day. Mama tries not to wake up for the day.
7:30am. Daddy comes home, and takes the kids, letting mama snooze (I know, I’m lucky!).
8:00am. Daddy takes a shower. Mama starts breakfast (probably with the baby on one hip).
8:15am. Everyone eats breakfast.
8:30am. Daddy cleans up and dresses the toddler, while mama cleans up and dresses the baby. Daddy leaves for work.
8:45am. Mama cleans up the dishes and feeds the dogs (sometimes with the toddler’s “help”).
9:00am. Play time! Toddler probably asks for Play Doh or painting or rice. Baby attempts to eat/scatter everything. Mama mediates fights.
9:15am. “I’m going to put Kinley down for a nap. Stay out here and play with cars/kitchen/puzzles/books.” Toddler attempts to “help” put the baby down anyway. Eventually the toddler is banished from the baby’s room, and the baby falls asleep.
9:30am. Shower? If yes, probably with toddler, so she doesn’t try to wake the baby. If not, quickly get dressed, and get some one-on-one time with the toddler.
10:00am. Baby wakes up. Play time! Maybe go for a walk, play at a park. If mama’s feeling ambitious, go to a store (probably Target).
11:00am. Lunchtime! Everyone is impatient while mama makes and serves lunch. Then everyone takes forever to finish eating.
12:00pm. Toddler’s nap! Do nap routine while the baby climbs over everyone/squeals/distracts the toddler.
12:15pm. Baby’s nap! Start baby’s nap routine, and eventually get her into the crib. Mama quickly picks up/switches laundry/writes blog posts.
1:00pm. Baby wakes up. Rock her back to sleep, and hold her on the couch for the rest of nap time. Mama finishes blog posts, scrolls through Facebook, never makes it to watching tv (or doing the research she keeps saying she’ll do).
2:00/2:30pm. Everyone wakes up. Chill on the couch, while not watching Frozen again.
3:00pm. Get out of the house! Go to a store/on a walk/outside. Lots of play time. Lots of time spent running around, trying to keep the house organized and clean. Maybe take a bath.
4:30pm. Attempt to put the baby down for another nap. Probably fail. Sometimes succeed. Keep shushing the toddler.
5:00pm. Mama puts away dishes and starts dinner (sometimes with the baby on her hip/screaming at her legs).
6:00pm. Daddy gets home! Everyone eats dinner!
6:30pm. Parents clean up the kids, brush their teeth, get them in pajamas, turn off the lights, load the dishwasher, feed the dogs. “Quiet” (as in, “keep-telling-the-toddler-to-be-calm”) play.
7:00pm. Mama puts the baby to bed. Daddy puts the toddler to bed.
7:30pm. Pour the wine, chat with daddy, eat dessert.
8:00pm. Daddy falls asleep on the couch. Mama watches tv and scrolls through Facebook.
10:00pm. Everyone goes to bed. Probably after the baby wakes up.
1:00am. Baby probably wakes up again.
Rinse, and repeat. But never the same way twice.
